Yes, the XFL is coming back and it will have its inaugural (return) season in 2020, but fans had no real idea if there would even be a team anywhere near them.
Vince McMahon's professional football league announced Wednesday the eight cities that will field teams when the XFL relaunches in the spring of 2020. The yet-unnamed Seattle franchise will play home games at CenturyLink Field, sharing with the Seahawks and the Seattle Sounders of the MLS.
"Combined these markets comprise almost a quarter of the nation's population", said XFL commissioner and CEO Oliver Luck at a news conference held at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium. In all, eight cities will get an XFL squad: Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Seattle, St. Louis, Tampa Bay, and Washington, D.C.
The Washington region did not have a franchise in the original XFL. McMahon is building the XFL with the same commitment and resolve that he has demonstrated building WWE into a global media and sports entertainment powerhouse. Luck promised a quicker pace of play with the overall goal of keeping games under three hours. "The XFL will offer fast-paced games with fewer play stoppages and simpler rules", the league said in a news release.
"We will be looking for the best players and coaches who want to be part of something exciting", Luck said at a news conference on Tuesday. The league will start with eight teams, 45-man active rosters and a 10-week regular-season schedule, with a postseason consisting of two semifinal playoff games and a championship game.
Team names, uniforms, and personnel won't be announced until next year.
It did not give details on how the league will be different than the NFL but said research is underway.
