Colton Treu, was identified as the driver of the truck that left the roadway on County Road P near the Highway 29 overpass, crashing into a Girl Scout Troop that was picking up trash in the ditch along the roadway.
Colten Treu, 21, sped off after the collision in Lake Hallie Saturday morning, but later surrendered. The Chippewa County Sheriff's Office said that authorities are pursuing charges that would include four counts of homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle, four counts homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle, four counts of hit-and-run involving death, and one count of hit-and-run involving great bodily harm.

The victims were struck Saturday morning while picking up trash along a rural road in Lake Hallie, 90 miles (145 kilometers) east of Minneapolis and just south of Chippewa Falls. A fourth juvenile female was transported to the hospital in critical condition.
The group of seven girls and five parents had "highly visible" green safety vests on at the time, police said in a statement. Police say Treu had been inhaling chemical vapors before the crash around 11:30 a.m. Saturday in Lake Hallie. "We will be providing ongoing support for both students (and) families and staff for as long as needed". A passenger in Treu's truck also surrendered to police in Eau Claire, but that suspect had not been identified, the newspaper reported. The two-ton pickup slammed into the Scouts, visiting tragedy on the town of 14,000 before speeding off.

At a little before noon on Saturday, Treu struck and killed three girl scouts and one adult who was supervising the girls as the picked up trash by the side of a country road.
"Our hearts are with our Girl Scout sisters in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin", Girl Scouts CEO Sylvia Acevedo said in a statement. He took off but later turned himself in. Anyone who may have witnessed the accident is asked to contact the Lake Hallie Police Department.
Sokup said it was not immediately known if there were other factors that might have led the driver to leave the road. Striking vehicle is believed to be a black or dark grey Ford F-150 '04-'06 with heavy front end damage and missing both side view mirrors.
Lake Hallie police Sgt. Daniel Sokup told The Associated Press Treu will be charged with four counts of homicide. Crash occurred at 11:41am.
