Dr Khalid Mufti said the World Health Organisation (WHO) set a theme for the day every year, adding the day is being observed this year under the theme of, "Young people and mental health in a changing world".
The chairman of the Nigerian Psychological Association, Federal Capital Territory Chapter, Dr Emmanuel Alhassan, in a statement to mark this year's World Mental Health Day, which comes up tomorrow, October 10th said if mental health issues are tackled as soon as they occur, they may not degenerate to mental illnesses. People from all different sections of the society come out in support to celebrate this annual awareness program and discuss its effects on people's lives worldwide.
Affective disorders affect 6% of the population every year, while substance use disorders affect 5%.
Over half (54%) the people who had ever been homeless had a disorder, almost three times the rate of people who had not.

"Suicide is the most extreme and visible symptom of the larger mental health emergency we are so far failing to adequately address", they continue.
The Betterfuture: Better Mental Health programme has been built using the framework introduced by Building Mental Health; an industry-wide initiative joining construction businesses with active and freely available support, information and advice.
"Young people need to be guided and mentored as they grow up so they are able to understand themselves and the world around them".
Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday said United Nations is committed to creating a world where by 2030 everyone, everywhere has someone to turn to in support of their mental health, in a world free of stigma and discrimination.
The UN chief said health encompasses both physical and mental well-being.
"We hope this small step will help those who need to take time out for their personal wellbeing to do so without feeling a stigma".
Speaking on World Mental Health Day, Commission joint lead editor Professor Vikram Patel, from Harvard Medical School in the U.S., said: "Mental health is the foundation of human capability that makes each life worthwhile and meaningful".
