A spokesperson for Melania Trump tells me "there are not plans for her to attend" the president's "Celebration For America" that he's holding instead of meeting the Eagles today. The first lady said in a written statement after last June's event that these families "are a unique and distinct category of individuals who should be cherished".
Questions surrounding Melania's absence grew increasingly loud in the last week, prompting the first lady to snipe at the press for inquiring about her.
"We saw so much happen over the past week but one thing we did not see was First Lady Melania Trump", Colbert said.
Colbert then noted that when the First Lady arrived back in the White House after her medical procedure, President Donald Trump tweeted a welcome where he accidentally refered to her as "Melanie". Colbert said. "She might hear it from down the hall".
Mrs. Trump had not been seen in public since May 10, when she and the president welcomed home three Americans freed from North Korea. Twitter was abuzz with theories from political observers, both on the left and the right, with a public anxious to see their first lady.More news: Kanye West's New Album 'Ye' Is Here
First Lady Melania Trump made her first public appearance in almost a month on Monday after undergoing a medical procedure in mid-May. "It's her style and we just have to accept that".
Mrs Trump, 48, was hospitalised for five days, but her disappearance from the public eye following her surgery led to rumours about her health and marriage. "And they claim she came home to the White House".
It's still unclear when the first lady will make an appearance in public.
