Sam Allardyce has spoke out regarding Wayne Rooney's potential transfer to DC United and insists the striker hasn't asked to leave Everton.

"I've always looked at Wayne Rooney as someone who just wants to play football, wants to get on the ball, touch the ball 40, 50, 60, 70 times and sometimes that has been his Achilles heel".

Rooney rejoined his boyhood club Everton from Manchester United in July past year.

Allardyce is aware of talks between Rooney's representatives and the MLS side but said he had not yet asked to leave.

The speculation over the 32-year-old increased on Friday when he left training early, although it has since been reported that it was due to an injury which will keep him out of Sunday's match with West Ham United.

It's looking increasingly likely that Wayne Rooney is about to add a third club to his CV.

Everton forward Wayne Rooney has been urged by Craig Bellamy to pack his bags for America in the summer, in favour of a move to Rangers. I've really enjoyed it and the players have worked hard when we came in; we had to get them in order a little bit and get them playing a bit better, and I think we've done that. All I know is that there appears to be an interest from D.C. United - where that is and where that lies and where Wayne lies with it, I can't tell you at the moment.

With the Washington-based club now sat at the foot of the Eastern Conference, with already little hope of a playoff finish so early in the season, Rooney could return to the Premier League on-loan during the off-season should he move.

"The game has changed massively in the last few years". They've not won back-to-back top-flight away games since September 2016.

"I have a one-year contract and until some time somebody says to me "I do not want you to fulfil that contract" then I have a contract", he said. I have been very fortunate to be able to play professionally for as long as I have.

The former England boss has already been talking up his summer plans with transfer targets being lined up, despite his future remaining up in the air.

"The team leave this afternoon to make the trip down to London".
