It was the first Terre Haute police officer slain in the line of duty since July 11, 2011, when Officer Brent D. Long was killed serving an arrest warrant at a home, the Terre Haute Tribune-Star reported.

Terre Haute Police Officer Rob Pitts has been identified as the law enforcement officer killed Friday evening in Terre Haute.
Terre Haute police Chief John Plasse said the suspect was wounded in the ensuing standoff with officers from the city and other agencies, then barricaded himself inside the building.
One of his bullets in the exchange of gunfire hit Pitts. Indiana State Police are investigating the shooting at Garden Quarter, while Terre Haute Police are handling the original homicide investigation on South 18th Street. Authorities say police know the suspect's name but haven't released it. We are deeply saddened by the loss of our officer, and ask that you keep our entire community in your prayers.
Local churches have also arranged a prayer vigil at 6 p.m. today at the Vigo County Courthouse.
The officer died after he was taken to Terre Haute Regional Hospital.
"The citizens of Terre Haute don't need to worry", says Sheriff Ewing.
Terre Haute police spokesman Ryan Adamson said the police officer's investigation of a homicide led him the apartment complex on the city's south side.
