London: Mohamed Salah was on Tuesday named as the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year for 2017/18 after scoring 43 goals so far in an incredible debut season for Liverpool.

Chelsea midfielder N'Golo Kante won the award last year and Salah will be honoured at the Footballer of the Year dinner on May 10.

Salah, who plays for Egypt and is expected to sizzle for the African giants at the World Cup this summer, is furious that his image features prominently on the outside of the national team's plane, which was provided by official sponsor WE.

The Egyptian pipped Manchester City star Kevin de Bruyne to the prize by just 20 votes in a ballot of over 400 FWA members that saw Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane finish third.

"Salahis the worthiest of winners".

The award comes a week after Salah was voted as player of the year by his fellow professionals.

Salah helped secure Liverpool's qualification to the UEFA Champions League Final after beating AS Roma 7-6 on aggregate in the semifinal. He is also the first African to receive the award and we congratulate him on a magnificent season'.

Alberto Moreno says team mate Mohamed Salah continues to surprise him on the pitch because he puts in minimal effort in training.

Salah's contributions alone would incredibly see Liverpool sat in seventh on 53 points and with a goal difference of +4 - four places below their current position, but enough to secure European football.

Jurgen Klopp's side travels to the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday for the return leg with a 5-2 lead over the Italians.

Eyebrows were raised when Liverpool chose to fork out £36million on Salah in June as he failed to make the grade at Chelsea during his previous spell in England.

He equalled the record held by Alan Shearer, Cristiano Ronaldo and Luis Suarez when he hit the back of the net against West Brom on April 21.
