Jonathan Schanzer, the senior vice president at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, also predicted a looming "showdown" between Israel and Iran on Syrian soil, going so far as anticipating the Middle East's "worst war" in decades.
"With the Syrian army having the upper hand on the ground against the armed terrorists, it would not be rational for it to use chemical weapons", the statement said. "The possible theaters for doing so are Syria, Lebanon, or anywhere else around the globe, and Iran may employ its characteristic use of terror proxies". He added that it also hit posts outside the base used by the Iranians and Iran-backed fighters.
As these strikes have not curbed Iranian efforts to establish a presence in Syria, Israel has communicated resolute, diplomatic and open messages, first and foremost the US and Russian Federation, that it will continue safeguarding its interests and will act to foil Iran's activities.
Russian Federation has warned that U.S. strikes in Syria would have "grave consequences", according to a Foreign Ministry statement.
Russia's foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said the US should target "terrorists" in Syria as opposed to its "legitimate government".
"The Cuban missile crisis might be the template Putin is looking at right now", he said.More news: Dana White Says Conor McGregor Tried To Justify Attack
Israel has yet to deny or confirm responsibility for the attack.
Within an hour, Trump tweeted again: "Our relationship with Russian Federation is worse now than it has ever been, and that includes the Cold War".
Syria's state news agency says missiles have struck an air base in central Syria in the early hours of the day.
Mr Trump had earlier taken to Twitter to issue a warning to Syrian and its allies.
The regime reportedly launches chemical attacks in Eastern Ghouta from the airbase.
"Israel has been trying to convince Washington to adopt a more pro-active, anti-Iran strategy in Syria, and certainly sees Trump's rhetoric in the wake of the chemical attack as an opportunity". The alleged attack in the town of Douma occurred Saturday night amid a resumed offensive by Syrian government forces after the collapse of a truce.
