If the meeting goes ahead - and if the White House was chosen as the venue - Mr Putin would be getting the honour of a closed-door Oval Office meeting for the first time since he met president George W Bush in 2005. The White House since confirmed the (informal) invitation.
The president thanked those who helped organize the events, including his wife and the White House Historical Association. They blew the whistles several times before moving to a card-making station for USA troops. Here's why that has alarms ringing in diplomatic and foreign policy circles. In addition, he congratulated his Russian counterpart for his electoral victory, which cost him an avalanche of criticism in Washington in face of allegations of irregularities in elections. Moscow responded by expelling the same number of U.S. diplomatic staff from Russian Federation and closing the consulate in St. Petersburg.
"We have nothing further to add at this time", Sanders added.
The leaders haven't yet made plans for a White House meeting.

The invitation, nevertheless, seemed to represent Trump's efforts to cooperate with Putin on multiple worldwide issues. Kurt Volker, U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine, informed about the preparation to the meeting. "So many military people are with us today".
The invitation is also just the latest example of the president seeming to be on a different page from the rest of the administration when it comes to Russian Federation. "They are wrong! Getting along with Russian Federation (and others) is a good thing, not a bad thing".
There's also the issue of what might happen should the meeting actually take place.
Melania Trump looked ready for Spring on Monday in a powder blue coat to celebrate the 140th annual Easter Egg Roll at the White House.
Both presidents held ir first meeting last July in Germany and were seen again in November at a summit in Vietnam.
