The new-generation Toyota RAV4 has been revealed ahead of its Australian debut in early 2019, with the revamped mid-sized SUV bringing a far more robust design to the Toyota SUV stable. There's more that's changed than just the name: The Corolla Hatchback rides an all-new platform, and it's actually a different platform from what's underneath the current Toyota Corolla sedan.
Hicks came to Toyota in 1996 and has since led many technology initiatives at the company.
At the opposite end of the spectrum, the RAV4 Adventure gets tougher looks that include a unique front fascia, an available contrasting color roof panel, matte black exterior accents, 19-inch alloy wheels, and orange interior cues. The hood is more muscular, the front grille larger, the headlights more imposing.
Unfortunately for fans of the original model, the RAV4 has lost much of its initial identity (established on the first and second generations) in terms of styling. The hybrid version of the RAV4 will have a 2.5-litre petrol engine mated to the usual Toyota electric setup - only this time the vehicle features a second electric motor powering the rear wheels, allowing the hybrid version to offer four-wheel drive for the first time.
A new-to-Toyota dynamic torque-vectoring all-wheel-drive system with a rear driveline disconnect is one of three AWD systems available on the '19 RAV4. It's likely to be a similar four-cylinder to the 149 horsepower unit in the outgoing model, but it should be an even more fuel-efficient engine to go with the updated all-wheel drive system that will also be a feature of the 2019 model.
Toyota is also throwing in the latest version of its Entune infotainment system, in-car WiFi, Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa control, all controlled with a 7-inch touchscreen display.
As with the U.S. version, the Euro-spec RAV4 will be offered with a choice of two powertrain options. Four hybrid variants and six ICE versions are to be offered for the new RAV4, in Toyota's own words. It can send 50% of engine torque to rear wheels as well as apportion it between left and right rear wheels to improve handling, the automaker says. While the Toyota RAV4 has come nowhere near the Indian market so far, in the USA, the company sold over 400,000 units of the SUV past year with a growth of 15 per cent. Toyota's Safety Sense 2.0 - which adds pre-collision braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warnings with steering assist, lane tracing, road sign assist, and automatic high beams is now standard like other Toyota models.
