People hold placards and candles during a vigil for Gauri Lankesh, a senior Indian journalist who according to police was shot dead outside her home on Tuesday by unidentified assailants in Bengaluru, in Ahmedabad, India, September 6, 2017.
The court has postponed the hearing in this regard to March 12. He is reportedly linked to the Sanatan Sanstha outfit and its affiliate the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti. However, after Naveen's arrest, he has gone underground. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been given the custody for the probe.
"Lankesh in the city past year". Links between Kumar and the Sanstha emerged after evidence surfaced that Kumar had organised a meeting of the Sanstha and the HJS in his hometown, Maddur, last November.
Kumar's lawyer Vedamurthy argued that he had been in custody for 20 days, and there was no need to extend it.
After going through the murder cases of Narendra Dabholkar, Govind Pansare and M M Kalburgi, the bullets used to kill Gauri match only with the one used in the killing of Kalburgi.More news: Local steel and fabrication ready for tariffs
A native of Mandya district about 100 km from Bengaluru, Naveen Kumar was caught by the organised crime wing of the state police's central crime branch on February 18, 2018. The court did not consider the police's plea to include charges of attempt to murder and conspiracy in the case since investigations had revealed that Kumar was allegedly at advanced stage of executing the killing of K S Bhagawan, an outspoken writer, rationalist and critic of some Hindu religious beliefs.
On Friday, a magistrate's court approved bail for Naveen Kumar in the Arms Act case.
Bhagawan is based in Mysuru.
Subsequently, after interrogation, he was taken into eight days custody by SIT for suspected links in the Gauri Lankesh murder case. The arrest comes six months after the murder. Naveen was supposed to have helped Gauri's killers source weapons and ammunition.
Investigations by the SIT has unearthed CCTV footage of a man conducting a recce of the home of the journalist a few hours before her killing.
