Select 2018 models of the Acer Aspire, Switch, Swift and Spin laptops; Asus ZenBook and VivoBook; and HP's Pavilion Wave PC will include Alexa integration. And initially it will be available in the USA via an update through Acer Care Center and wider support is expected to be rolled out mid-2018.
With Amazon Alexa, users with compatible Acer notebooks and PCs can get more done by asking Alexa to check their calendar, create lists and answer questions; be entertained by asking Alexa to play their favourite music, podcasts or audiobooks.
"Hands-free access to Alexa on PCs can be helpful to customers in many ways, like making it simple to interact with your smart home, get news or weather, set timers, and more", Steve Rabuchin, Vice President of Amazon's Alexa division, said in Acer's press release.
The manufacturer says that Alexa support is enabled by Intel's Smart Sound Technology, which is an integrated audio digital signal processor (DSP) that is designed with this kind of usage scenario in mind. It is worth noting here that Amazon has already made its strong presence in the voice assistant world with more than 25 thousand Alexa Skills, whereas Microsoft's Cortana has merely 300 skills, as highlighted by Hassan.More news: Jio slashes monthly tariffs by Rs 50, hikes data limit
Amazon's voice-activated assistant Alexa is coming to several laptop and desktop computers sold by HP Inc., Asus, and Acer.
Some notebook editions such as Spin 5 and Switch 7 Black Edition powered with 4 digital microphones and Acer Purified Voice can activate Alexa up to 9ft from the user, and the ones with dual microphones within3 ft from the user. Also, most of the supported Acer convertibles and 2-in-1 notebooks have front-facing speakers.
Alexa already works with the Acer Air Monitor, and it will also be available on Acer's new V6820M and V6820i 4K UHD projectors. With the PC integrations, Amazon is moving Alexa onto Microsoft's turf at a time when the two Seattle-area companies are separately working to make Alexa and Cortana work together.
The Acer V6820M/i wireless projector proves to be the delight of movie-buffs, offering 3D home theater experiences with the projector supporting HDR. To keep visuals smooth, Acer also implements a frame interpolation system. That machine will be available in January with a starting price of $1699.
