Authorities in Washington say a Pierce County Sheriff's deputy has died from gunshot wounds sustained while responding to a home invasion. He leaves behind a wife and three sons.
"We don't know if the suspect on the loose has been shot or what he's armed with", said Pierce County Sheriff's Department spokesman Ed Troyer, according to KIRO.
McCartney was shot during a foot chase following a home invasion in Frederickson, about 24 kilometres southeast of Tacoma.
