The couple was four hours into an 11-hour flight from Los Angeles to Tokyo when the crew found an unauthorized passenger.
The plane turned back Tuesday because a passenger on the flight had boarded the wrong aircraft. Teigen - on the plane with husband John Legend - tweeted that the plane made an about-face about four hours into the scheduled 11-hour flight.
The model Chrissy Teigen was one of more than 200 passengers on an All Nippon Airways flight that left Los Angeles at 11:36 Tuesday morning and arrived (safely!) at 7:33 p.m. - in Los Angeles.
Police interviewed the passengers for information on the mysterious traveller, and Teigen jokingly apologised to her 9.2 million followers for not being able to provide officers with details.More news: Crude Oil Gains 2.8% to Trade $67 on Libya Pipeline Blast
The airline did not immediately say why the wrong boarding pass was accepted.
A USA government official with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press that the incident involved two brothers - one ticketed on ANA and the other on a United Airlines flight leaving about the same time.
It may seem outrageous, but it is surprisingly common for planes to return to their point of origin midway through a flight, analysts said. Although police haven't said exactly what the mix-up was, Teigen tweeted the unauthorized person had a United ticket, they were on ANA.
The airline said it supported the pilot's decision "out of the abundance of caution and safety for the passengers and crew". "We take great pride providing exemplary customer service, and on this flight we failed to do so". "ANA would like to express its apologies to the passengers for the inconvenience", it said.
